10A NB: The idle air gap and 7 second pinch test procedures outlined above need to be carried out before the motor gets too warm – otherwise higher crankcase temperatures will not allow the correct results to be achieved. You need to be able to conclude this procedure in about 2 to 3 minutes. Once you get the hang of it you can do it in less than a minute.

Manufacturers don’t use a consistent and universal standard to rate the temperature ranges of their glow plugs. You will probably know the temperature of a plug relative to others within a given product line, but currently, no rating system allows comparisons among manufacturers. Here again, plain old experience with a variety of glow plugs will help you to know which are best for the effect you want.

Nitro engines for models can turn in excess of 50,000 RPM. Typical operating rpm for sport model aircraft engines is 10,000-14,000 rpm. For radio control (RC) boats and ducted fan aircraft engines, 20,000-25,000 is the usual range, and for cars rpm in the range of 25,000-37,000 is common. With this much movement, a lot of frictional heat is generated and the fuel used for these engines usually contains between 12-20% oil content depending on the nitromethane and methanol percentage, the engine type and application. Most engines in RC cars today are 2 stroke engines, which means that it takes 2 strokes of the piston (one revolution) to complete the engine cycle. On the first stroke as the piston travels upward, a mixture of fuel and air is sucked into the crankcase, from the carburettor. When the piston travels downward the new fuel air mixture travels into the induction port and finally into the combustion chamber. As the piston travels upward the mixture is compressed which causes the fuel/air mixture to ignite, producing hot gas under pressure to force the piston down. As the piston travels downward the spent exhaust gases escape out of the combustion chamber through the exhaust port, and the cycle starts over by the fuel mixture being again pushed into the induction port.
When your idle is good, and you’re getting good response off the line, your LSN is set. Just make sure you monitor your temps closely, since a too lean LSN will will raise your temp to dangerous levels.

The idle speed is used to adjust the throttle input when the throttle servo is at idle. This should be set low enough to keep the vehicle from moving at idle, but high enough to keep the engine running. When adjusting the idle speed screw, Counter-clockwise closes the carb, therefore decreasing idle speed. Clockwise opens it, therefore increasing idle speed. This should be the last thing set up, but if it’s obviously too high, there is nothing wrong with adjusting it while tuning.
Above are some pictures of the spray bar assembly in an engine from my graveyard. Please excuse the condition of this carburetor, this engine has been buried in the dirt a couple of times. But this give you an idea of what the low-speed needle consists of.

    Imagine that the head of the needle valve—the part that looks like a screw head— is a clock face. That screw head gives you twelve hours per one full turn. When tuning, turn the needles in one-hour increments and allow 30 seconds for the adjustments to take full effect. Always tune from rich to lean. If you’re unsure where to begin and you’ve already altered the needle, richen the main needle two full turns from its fully closed position.
    Since you are looking at the savage and LST, look into one with a roto start, normal glowplug and normal crank. This motor would work perfect for your application

    The key is that the fuel system not only be free of fuel leaks but also be airtight. Air leaks in the fuel system cause uneven pressure in the fuel tank and excessive air bubbles in the fuel lines. Both of these can make starting and tuning the engine more difficult. It isn’t unusual to have a few air bubbles in the fuel line, but you might have problems if you have excessive, persistent bubbles.

    We got the theory part of the engine under control. We can’t really tune a piston or adjust a crank-shaft, at least not in your every-day engine maintenance and adjustment. So without further delays lets dive into the 2nd phase of this project& The Carburetor. What good is a 1.2 HP engine if you can’t keep the dam thing running?
